Let’s begin by defining what we mean. By “genuine Basque”, we are indicating that the beret comes from Basque country in Europe, i.e. the Pyrenees Mountains on the border of Spain and France. This is the birthplace of the beret. What matters first and foremost when assessing a beret’s quality is the wool felt that it is made from. Berets from China or India simply do not measure up to the meaty, 100%-wool, “Impermeable” (waterproof), centuries old, quality finish of the Basque beret.
Now, why buy the Jaxon versus other options available in the North American market? The Jaxon Basque Beret does not skimp on the details. For example, our competitors – in a cost-saving effort to shave some Euros in a world where the dollar is losing ground – has opted for a vinyl sweatband, hoping either that customers will not notice or care. We, however, remain committed to the leather sweatband as it absorbs sweat better, feels better against one’s forehead, looks better, and is more traditional. To us, it’s a headwear sin to put a vinyl sweatband in a genuine Basque beret.
The finish of the Jaxon is exquisite: a satin lining sewn (not glued like some) to the tips (the inside of the hat under the crown) and not on the sides. This allows the hat to breath. [Enlarge the thumbnail image for a look.]
A label – sewn to the lining - that includes the Jaxon logo “ and reads “Authentic Basque Beret” and “Impermeable Pure Virgin Wool.”.

Note: Some customers feel that this beret runs slightly large. Therefore, if you are between two sizes, we suggest ordering the smaller size of the two.
